With sincere apologies to Aaron Sorkin a second time. This, like Arcade Fire played on The Dan Patrick Show every Friday afternoon, is how you know it is the end.
Where have we been? Well determining whether or not to continue publication has been our continual focus for about three months. Simply, Google changed their algorithm and our income and viewers dropped by 75%. We were also facing massive GDPR compliance expenses because monitoring services treated each article as a page and the 12,000 pages each had a fee, meaning we would be out about £10K per year, despite not collecting any data from anyone at any time.
So, we’ve put the website and URL up for sale (write to denisgcampbell (at) gmail (dot) com with inquiries). We’re stopping a few days short of our 13th anniversary on 23 April and wanted to thank you for your support.
We had a very good innings. We’ve brought you everything newsworthy since 2006: the 1st campaign of Barack Obama, Brexit, Trump and everything in between. And for four+ years The Three Muckrakers podcast.
Most online publications follow one of two trajectories. They are either like Huffington Post (grow and sell for $300+ million dollars) or fail within the first six months. Thriving for thirteen years is wholly due to dedicated readers like you. We averaged 300,000 unique readers each month and those readers stayed on our pages for up to 10 minutes (a lifetime on the internet!) because of our attention to detail and new content. And, we could never really make this self-supporting.
Each day eight-twelve new posts appeared, one or two were featured long-reads contributed by our fantastic collection of 47 contributors. Every one of them recognised we were interested in giving them a consistent platform and we were grateful for their voices.
I want to add my thanks to them and you, our readers for 13 great years.
More things will soon follow at: deniscampbell.com and deniscampbell.co.uk including a brand new intervies podcast called: What We May Be… so, watch this space.
As I always ended each podcast episode, “That’s it. That’s all. Thank you for reading (listening) and goodbye.”
