Opponents of President Barack Obama’s Iran deal — led by Republican presidential candidates Donald Trump and Sen. Ted Cruz — rallied on Capitol Hill to show how they felt about the plan.
A veritable who’s who of conservative and tea party stars joined Trump and Cruz on stage to rail against the plan, and both Republican and Democratic leadership, who they say failed them. Here are highlights:
12:50 p.m.: Many in the crowd are huddled under umbrellas on this scorching September afternoon. The high temperature in Washington is forecast to reach 94 degrees.
1:13 p.m.: Many people are taking shelter in the shade provided by trees around the perimeter and folding “Stop the Iran Deal” signs into makeshift fans. People have continued to stream onto the lawn shortly after 1 p.m., while some were met at the southwest corner of the lawn by a group of CodePink protesters who are advocating for the deal. Signs and American flags dotted the lawn. A few bystanders stopped one rally-goer to take pictures of her “Cruz Control: No Iran Deal.” Susan, the woman holding the sign, declined to give her last name but told CQ Roll Call she is from Florida and has been on the West Lawn since 10 a.m. “You have to take a stand and fight for what you believe in,” she said.
Someone kinda tried to rush the stage, now there’s a very large dude in a suit standing right next to Palin. #IranDeal — Eli Yokley (@eyokley) September 9, 2015
