George Will Speaks Out on the Debt Ceiling Vote Threat, Others On Panel Agree

George is the Right Wing’s most lucid and erudite curmudgeon. He is one of the few Round Table ‘fixtures’ left on the ABC news programme This Week. This statement on the GOP/Tea Party threat to veto the raising of the debt limit ceiling, allowing states to go bankrupt and the investigation crazy House is classic Will.

What is most shocking about the exchange is that four panelists who would not normally agree on anything… Amy Walters, George Will, Donna Brazile and Major Garrett agree that Tea Party Republicans need to grow up before they wreck the US economy.

Will specifically chides them for the threat such a measure poses to the fiscal solvency of the nation.

“I know of no other developed nation that has a debt ceiling. This is a purely recurring symbolic vote to make people feel good by voting against it.

The trouble is it’s suicidal if you should happen to miscalculate and have all kinds of people voting against it as a symbolic vote and turn out to be a majority. Because if the United States defaults on its sovereign debt, the markets will be — well, it will be stimulating.”

Earlier, senior GOP Senator Lindsey Graham appearing on NBC’s Meet the Press, drew a line in the sand saying: “I’m not going to vote for a debt ceiling increase unless we go back to 2008 spending levels, cutting the discretionary spending.”

And Congress does not even reconvene until Wednesday? Oh what a week this will be!
