Ed Miliband seeks to calm MPs’ fears over Ukip and migration

Poor Ed is always having problems. Eddie is being attacked both internally and externally by Tories.

The Guardian explains his dilemma.

On Monday night, Ed Miliband will address Labour MPs and tell them of his strategy to win the next election. His deputy, Harriet Harman, has insisted that the party will not “have a wobble or a leadership change”. Labour officials are adamant that David Cameron is the one with his path to a majority government blocked by UKIP. Labour has promised to address the issues of integration of immigrants, reducing exploitation, and ensuring they make a larger contribution before they receive benefits. The Labour candidate in the Rochester and Strood byelection has expressed her concern about her party stressing the economic benefits of migration. Naushabah Khan said that while people can understand the economic benefits of migration, they can see the pressure put on public services, such as hospital and housing waiting lists. Labour candidate, Rowenna Davis, in the marginal seat of Southampton, said that people in her area are feeling the effects of increased immigration and decreased wages in the construction industry. Miliband will have to address these issues if he is to win the next election.

At a meeting with Shadow Immigration Minister David Hanson, Labour MP Yvette Cooper expressed her understanding of the difficult task he faced. However, she noted that the answers he has given on the doorstep would not be well-received by voters. Cooper explained that these voters are not racist, as many of them have friends and family members who are migrants. She urged the party to offer something more, as it is impossible to plan public services for migrants or British citizens without knowing how many are coming into the country in the future.
